When Showering Love was nothing more than a dream, we knew that in order for us to bring our dream to reality, we would need a cadre of volunteers to accomplish this daunting project.
In August of 2016, Showering Love was ready to move the project forward and our first task was to gather some volunteers to brainstorm on how we could raise the money to purchase the bus for our mobile showers. We called together 20 friends and then asked each of them to ask 20 of their friends for $20.00. We called this our 20/20/20 campaign. Within three weeks, we had raised enough money to purchase a bus. The power of volunteers was evident by their accomplishments, in such a short time.
Throughout our journey from retrofitting the bus through the official unveiling and beyond, it has been because of the many volunteers that Showering Love’s dream of restoring hope and dignity to the most vulnerable in our community came to fruition. Our volunteers continue to show up as we have increased the awareness of Showering Love in the community. There are many volunteers that are working behind the scenes to keep Grace, our mobile shower bus running, as well as volunteers that help us in our outreach to provide showers and to offer other support in the community.
Our social media platform and website is being run by Bob McLaughlin of Dade PC, who has volunteered his experience and expertise. Our Board of Directors includes business and community leaders who believe in our mission and volunteer their time to sit on our Board and to guide us. Businesses have volunteered their services and donated resources, whether it was in the retrofitting or other mechanical services, to insure that we continue to be of service to the community. And recently, we have partnered with HandsOn Broward, an organization that aligns a myriad of community projects with thousands of volunteers, to assist Showering Love in meeting the demand for volunteers in our various projects and fundraisers.
Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. –Martin Luther King, Jr.
Volunteers are the heart of Showering Love and we remain grateful for their steadfast commitment and altruistic actions.
