Why Volunteer for Showering Love?

Yes, Tom, Why Volunteer for Showering Love?

So, the other day, my sister-in-law, Jeanne Lewis Albaugh, founder and CEO of Showering Love asked me a simple question.  “Tom, why volunteer for Showering Love:”  Jokingly, I said, “I’ll have to get back to you.”  But that question lingered in my head like an ear worm, like a song that just wouldn’t go away!  The first time I volunteered was as a favor to my wife, Deborah.  When she asked if I could help, of course I said yes.  How could anybody say no to such a beautiful and caring woman?

Why?  Because Showering Love is an Amazing Charity!

My first opportunity to volunteer for Showering Love was the Hollywood Candy Cane Parade.  While I was walking alongside the bus, I was throwing candy canes to the crowd.  And I heard comments like, “What a great idea!” and “What an amazing charity!”  Later, there were people who came up to us crying, thanking Jeanne for the services Grace provides for the community.  Grace was beautiful! (Grace is the bus, in case you didn’t know.)  She was all decked out in her holiday decorations and lights!  Why volunteer for Showering Love?  Because I was so impressed!  I couldn’t wait to do it again!

The next time I stepped up to volunteer for Showering Love, it was at the main library in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  We were there to give our time for the Martin Luther King Day of Service because Showering Love does more than just give showers.  We offer wrap-around services that help people who are experiencing homelessness. That day, I was truly taken aback by what I saw!  A whole gamut of emotions rushed through me — anger, frustration, and disgust at the conditions these human beings were living in!  How can anybody allow this?  Why volunteer for Showering Love?  Because, with every fiber of my being, I want to help every last one of these people!

Ok, So Again, Tom, Why Volunteer for Showering Love?

Because now, I’m hooked!  I’m addicted to the good feeling I get when I see our guests transform from their heads hanging low, sad looks on their faces, to heads held high, backs straight, and smiles!!  I don’t mind cleaning the bathrooms for the next guest or sweating while I’m working on the bus.  Furthermore, I don’t even mind all the time we put in behind the scenes, folding laundry and stocking the bus.

And finally, because I appreciate you!  Thank you, Jeanne, and thank you, Grace!  Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers and donors.   Let’s keep providing hot showers, along with respect and love!  Because, in the end, we are all human!

And thank you to Thomas Andor for your wonderful words!

Let’s keep providing hope and dignity to people experiencing homelessness – DONATE NOW
