A Volunteer Angel Among Us "If you look for the helpers, you'll know there's hope"…
Veterans are 50% more likely* to experience homelessness due to a lack of support, resources, finances, and adequate living arrangements. This is the case for Sarge, a disabled U.S. veteran and frequent guest of Showering Love.
Every Tuesday and Friday we hop in the car and drive to pick Sarge up, since his disabilities and many different illnesses make his journey to us very difficult for him. One day, Sarge shared a story with us that recently he had been so hungry that he ate grass! Can you believe that!? It is so heartbreaking to hear stories like this. Can you imagine the feeling of being so hungry that you eat grass!?
Veteran Gives To Others
Sarge went on to explain that he does receive food stamps, however earlier when he was at Winn Dixie, he overheard that the woman standing in line in front of him did not have enough money for food for her kids. Sarge selflessly used his food stamps to pay for the woman’s groceries so her children did not go hungry! This noble act of generosity unfortunately left him without enough food for the month.
Like many other veterans so often do, Sarge so graciously put the needs of others before his own.
Showering Love Helps Veterans
Stories like this are sadly not few and far between! That is why it is so important that Showering Love is there to provide showers, hygiene items, new clothes, – and a brown bag meal. We don’t want anyone else to feel so hungry that they turn to eating grass!
As a community, we need to stick together and help those who are struggling financially right now more than ever. Showering Love needs your support. If you feel touched by Sarge and his story, please make a donation of any amount. We can help veterans like Sarge, and countless others in our community get connected with the resources they desperately need.
No one should go hungry and NOBODY should have to eat grass!
