Showering Love Restores Hope

Showering Love Restores Hope

Showering Love restores hope!  I had been living under the Old Griffin Road Pier with my son and disabled husband for 2 months with no end in sight.

It all started one day in 2014. My husband was in a car accident!! His injuries were severe, needing multiple surgeries, rehab and home care.

At that time, I had a very stable corporate job – with 401k, health insurance, and money saved.  But as time passed, it disappeared!!  All our savings were depleted – everything had to be sold – and finally, I lost my job.

It was a difficult time! I tried and tried to find work but couldn’t!  By 2019 we were homeless, living in our car – my family and me.  I checked every avenue, hoping against hope that I’d find the help I needed. When I called 211, they told me there was a 3-month wait just to get on the list for shelter!

Showering Love To The Rescue

Then one day, I was desperate.  I needed a hot shower and restored hope!!  I remembered something about a mobile shower bus on TV – so I Googled it! Showering Love came up! I called – and Jeanne answered!!  I explained our situation and she let us come to Showering Love to shower.  It was like God sent an angel!

Jeanne gave us new underwear, t-shirts, toiletries – and nice smelling soap!!  And then she gave us “to go bags” with food and clothing.  And she listened!!  She cared!!  And then she got busy finding us lodging for the night!!

The thing about being homeless and trying to find work, is where do you get ready? Where do you iron your clothes, and take a shower to look nice?

Well, Showering Love’s friends, partners etc. came together and not just provided one night, they provided two weeks! Jeanne not only provided me with a shower and a place to stay, she went further. She worked on my emotional wellbeing. She dropped me in the middle of the most amazing women for me to pull strength and confidence from!  Jeanne provided support, tuff love, and guidance.

We had no hope for Christmas – but Showering Love restored that hope, too!!  They contacted a Secret Santa who provided an amazing Christmas for us!!!

And then, she invited me to Mitzvah Day at Temple Beth Emet to share my story! I didn’t look like what most people think a homeless person looks like!! It was important to share how one major life event can change the course of your life. Today, thanks to Showering Love’s conduit, I have a good job and we live in a nice 2-bedroom apartment.

They say it takes a village to raise a child – it takes a community to lift a person.  And this time, it only took one act of kindness. Showering Love restores hope through a conduit for resources, encouragement, and support.

A shower is more than a shower to a homeless person. It’s a way to feel new and get a fresh start.
