Nova Southeastern University Student Reflects

“I am currently a third-year undergraduate student at Nova Southeastern University – NSU
and have been involved in advocating for poverty since my first year of college. I have always
enjoyed meeting and communicating with legislators to speak on behalf of policies that would
help those impoverished because I love being a part of something so important – why should
anyone have to suffer from being deprived of basic life needs? Showering Love provided me a
completely different experience by allowing me the opportunity to work on the frontlines with the
homeless in Broward and Miami Dade County. It has completely changed my perspective on
why I want to give back to the community.”

Miami Homeless Up Close

As a Nova Southeastern University student, Tanha had never seen close up homelessness.  She writes,”On the Showering Love trips, you’ll see the homeless sitting on sidewalks with minimal if any belongings underneath the grandeur of tall buildings and the allure of downtown areas. The first time I went to volunteer in Miami, the sharp contrast hit me like a pile of bricks, discoloring all the marvel. The place would transform once Showering Love and our partner organizations came together to give the homeless showers, haircuts, food, and health screenings and I began distributing hygiene materials. It was absolutely amazing because within just minutes of singing
and giving out gifts, you could see the gloom subsiding and the atmosphere completely fills with
overwhelming happiness.”

Nova Southeastern University Student Learns Firsthand

I also learned that the moments that we spend with the homeless in Showering Love create
significant impacts in the lives of those we’re serving. One of the most memorable outreaches I
participated in was in Fort Lauderdale and a woman came up to me after taking a shower on our
bus and said “thank you so much, you don’t know how long it’s been” with the look of so much
relief. She seemed to contain her emotions of pain and sorrow, but it was clear how much this
shower meant to her.

I was taken aback because what I thought to be such a simple task
uplifted her entire day; seeing the effect it had was humbling. I now find myself wanting to return
to do little things like hand out the toothbrushes, shampoos, and menstrual hygiene products,
handle the registration table with a smile, and even sanitize the shower units for each of our
guests driven not just by justice but by the love and joy it brings. Through volunteering with
Showering Love, I realized that it’s smallest acts of kindness that can make the biggest
difference in people’s lives.

Tanha-and-Jeanne

Nova Southeastern University has given Showering Love a person who is kind and cares for others before herself. She has set forth an example for all to follow and has made us and NSU very proud!
