Abigayle Hurst is a 12 year old girl who lives in Plantation and goes to Plantation Middle School. Today we want to honor her and her commitment to helping the homeless. She developed a friendship with a homeless gentleman and she noticed that he carried his belongings in a trash bag. Because of this, she decided that she wanted to give free backpacks to the homeless. In addition, she would fill these backpacks with essentials – hygiene items, snacks, and other necessities.
Once she made this decision, she started right in implementing her plan to give out free backpacks. For her birthday, she requested backpacks and the items that she wanted to include in them. I don’t know many 12 year-olds who would give up their birthday wishes to help people in need! She’s a one-of-a-kind kid! She says, “I am drawn to help the homeless because I love helping people and animals all around the world. I also love making people happy and letting them know that they matter.”
Abigayle’s Angels: We Have Your Back
Abigayle made an Amazon wish list so that people could donate to her directly. She calls her organization “Abigayle’s Angels”. In addition, she gets a lot of help from her mom, Christine Florentine, who posts in the Cooper City Buzz, and from her dad, David Hurst, who is a veteran. Abigayle’s Angels partnered with Showering Love and Salon OGGI at All Saints Soup Kitchen in October for the “We Have Your Back” event. She gave out so many free backpacks!!
And then, Abigayle showed up at the Veteran’s Stand Down in Fort Lauderdale, where Lucky’s Market in Plantation sponsored her. Again, she partnered with Showering Love to give away her free backpacks! This time, PBS was there with the students from Pine Crest to record the event! What a day!! Her mom says, “Not all heroes wear capes. Our girls are my heroes!”
Coming Soon! Wings of Love!
Abigayle has a goal of providing 10,000 free backpacks in her lifetime. To help her toward that goal, in January, she will partner with Showering Love again for the Wings of Love event. (More on that later! Watch for this event!) This young lady, dubbed the “Can Do Kid” in Our City News, Plantation, December issue, is amazing! Our founder and CEO, Jeanne Albaugh says, ” I was told angels walk among us. Today, I got to see a real earth angel!” Thank you, Abigayle’s Angels for all you do to help others in need!
