Purses with a Purpose: Honoring Unhoused Mothers This Mother’s Day

When people picture homelessness, they don’t always picture mothers. But they should.

Many of the women we meet at Showering Love are mothers—some caring for children while living in cars, others desperately trying to reconnect with kids they haven’t seen in months or even years. For mothers experiencing homelessness, Mother’s Day can be heartbreaking, especially when they have little to no contact with their children. It’s a day that highlights love and connection, yet for so many, it feels like a painful reminder of what’s been lost.

That’s why this Mother’s Day, we’re asking you to help us honor them—with a simple, powerful gesture of love.

“Purses with a Purpose” – A Handbag of Hope

We’re collecting gently used handbags to gift to unhoused women in South Florida. Each purse will be filled with thoughtful items like:

  • Perfume

  • Nail polish

  • Jewelry

  • $10 gift cards

  • And a handwritten note of encouragement

These aren’t just purses—they’re reminders that someone sees them. That someone cares.

👩‍👧 The Bigger Picture: Why It Matters

Motherhood and homelessness intersect in painful ways.

Many of the moms we serve are single mothers in their 20s with two or more children, often under the age of 6. Studies show:

  • Mothers who are homeless are more likely to suffer from PTSD, depression, and chronic illness.

  • Their children face higher risks of developmental delays, anxiety, and school disruptions.

  • Nearly 70% of homeless mothers will be separated from at least one of their children during their lifetime.

Still, they show up. They survive. And they keep giving everything they have.

We want to give something back.
